How three 99% win-rate leaders blew up — all their wins combined couldn't cover one loss
The top of every copy-trading leaderboard has numbers like these: 95%, 97%, 99% win rate. Someone who almost never loses — of course you want to follow them.
We took three leaders from a major exchange’s public data who had 95–99% win rates and then collapsed, and read their trade history to the end. Three different people. The same way down.
In one line
For all three, a single losing trade was bigger than every winning trade combined.
Usual hold 5h · this losing position was held ~8 days · worth 167 average wins
Usual hold 2h · this losing position was held ~3 days · worth 1,071 average wins
Usual hold 4h · this losing position was held ~9 days · worth 332 average wins
What happened
Leader A — 140 of 146 closed trades in 90 days were winners, averaging about $1,240. Then one position was held for 8 days at 20x leverage. Price moved 15% the wrong way and that single trade closed at about −$200K — more than all 140 wins combined (about $170K). ROI went from +163% to negative. Over 4,000 people copied this leader along the way. Copier losses: about $370K.
Leader B — 99% win rate. 491 of 500 closed trades were winners — averaging $1.50. Leverage 50–100x. Twenty days in, four long positions that had been held for 2–3 days were liquidated within the same minute. One of them was worth over 1,000 average wins. More than 700 people copied. Copier losses: about $110K.
Leader C — 97% win rate. Normally closed positions within 3–4 hours. Except when losing — then held for 9 days. 20x leverage, price −14%. ROI fell from +200% to below −90%. About 170 followers became 2.
What they had in common
- Win small, win often. Taking small profits within hours puts the win rate at 95–99%.
- Never close a loser. Positions normally closed in hours are held for days — up to two weeks — when they’re losing, waiting to get back to green.
- High leverage. 20–100x. While waiting, a little more adverse movement ends it.
- One big move wipes out everything. And the followers who joined near the peak take the biggest hit.
Why the leaderboard can’t show this
Win rate is calculated on closed trades. Keep a losing position open and it never counts against the win rate. So right up to the day before the collapse, it still reads 99%.
What to check before you copy
- Largest single loss ÷ average win. If that’s in the tens or hundreds, a high win rate means nothing.
- Usual hold time vs. losing-position hold time. Hours when winning, days when losing = a holder of losers.
- Unrealized loss right now. Closed trades can look clean while open positions are deep in the red.
- Leverage setting. Above 20x, one mistake is the whole account.
- Track record length. Under 90 days, luck and skill look the same.
- Copier PnL, not leader PnL. The leader can win while followers lose.
Now hold us to the same yardstick
We asked our three strategies (BTC, ETH, SOL) the same questions we asked those leaders.
Largest single loss ÷ all wins combined
| Three 99% win-rate leaders | Low & Slow (backtest) | |
|---|---|---|
| Win rate | 95–99% | 28–52% |
| Largest loss ÷ average win | 167–1,071x | 0.3–0.7x |
| Largest loss ÷ all wins combined | 110–218% | 1–2% |
| How long losers are held | 37–58x their usual hold | 1/6 to 1/31 of winners (cut fast) |
| Leverage | 20–100x | Low |
Opposite structures
They close winners fast and hold losers. That makes a 99% win rate — and one loss takes everything.
We close losers fast and hold winners. So our win rate is low: we lose 5 to 7 times out of 10. But even our single worst loss is smaller than one average win. Against all our wins combined, it’s 1–2%.
What a low win rate costs
The price is real. Losing streaks happen. Flat months happen. It is not a number that stands out on a leaderboard. That’s why we wrote Know this first.
What you get in return: an account that can’t end in one loss. The single trade that took down those three leaders is structurally hard to happen here, because every trade has a stop loss.
To be honest
The Low & Slow numbers above are a backtest (~5–6 years, fees included). The live record is being built now, and we’ll replace this table with live numbers as it grows. Past results do not guarantee future returns.
Don’t watch how often someone wins. Watch how they lose.
